October 10, 2016 was a historic date. Not only did the citizens celebrate Columbus Day, but a new day of volunteerism was celebrated as well. October 10 was Community Involvement Day for San Saba ISD, the City of San Saba and Keep San Saba Beautiful. On this day the students of SSISD worked in cooperation with volunteers to aide identified shut in’s, work on projects throughout the City and at the school facilities. This event took place from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm on this Monday. Throughout the day, patrons saw city workers who had volunteers working side by side with SSISD students picking up trash, painting, clearing brush, painting playground equipment, and so much more.
Thanks to a change in how schools construct a school calendar SSISD has more time in the school year to learn from projects that are community based. The day of volunteerism was counted as a regular school day for students and staff. This day is an effort to give back to others who have helped make SSISD a great place to attend school and to a community that has given so much to the District. Those working on the project can be identified by the white t-shirt adorned with the logo “Armadillos Get Involved – We Rise by Lifting Others.” If you would like more information on this project please contact Sharon O'Neill at the City of San Saba at 325/372-5144 or Leigh Ann Glaze at the SSISD Central Office at 325/372-3771.
