Emaleigh and Luis represent SSHS at the 2017 Congressional Art Contest

Two SSHS art students, Junior, Emaleigh Mack, and Sophomore Luis Barcenas Aguilar represented San Saba High School in the 2017 Texas District 11 Congressional Art Contest for high school students, An Artistic Discovery, sponsored by the Honorable K. Michael Conaway, our U. S. Congressman for the students of the 29 counties he represents in Washington D. C.

Both students well represented our art program. Luis earned 3rd place with his amazing graphite drawing, “Las Preciosas” of his mother and grandmother, drawn from a photo Luis took at Christmas when he visited his grandmother in Mexico. Emaleigh represented our school for the second year with a highly creative and expressive mixed-media piece of herself and a friend.

The competition was held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Angelo State University for the second year. Students, families and teachers were invited to a reception at 1:00 in the Houston Harte University Center in Texas Collection Area. This year, many other San Angelo dignitaries were in attendance as well as Congressman Conaway and our own Dr. Bohensky. It is a such a special contest; the Honorable Congressman Conaway takes time to speak individually with each student about his or her artwork during the reception.

“Las Preciosas” can currently be viewed at the SSHS office. The artwork will be on display the week of May 15-19 at Arrowhead Bank and at Commercial National Bank the week of May 22-26. Thank you, in advance, to both banks for allowing SSHS Art to share this talented students’ work with our community.
