hello parents my name is dr. Paula Miller with the University of Texas at Austin on the mother of four and grandmother to two children I'm here with you today to talk about changing graduation requirements as a result of new law called House Bill 5 passed during the 83rd legislative session this law was passed as a result of our strong Texas Economy Inn economy that continues to increase the number of jobs and the types of jobs that are available Statewide businesses are being created each day with new occupations and occupations that are evolving to meet this new business unfortunately in Texas we have a mismatch with the number of jobs that are available in these highly skilled high paying jobs and the number of people that are available to fill them so House Bill 5 attempts to fix this dynamic in the job market by granting districts greater flexibility in the way that courses are offered to students it begins if your child selecting an endorsement area during the 8th grade year which really cool about these endorsements is that they're going to get to take glasses that can lead to job-related certificates associate degrees and even college readiness if they decide to go to college After High School as a parent you are the most important advocate for your child you will need to approve the endorsement area they select and work with y child High School to monitor their progress within the endorsement pathway it's me five three different ways students me graduation requirements approved by the State Board of Education the Law changes the number of credits a student needs to earn high school diploma the law also allows for greater flexibility in the types of courses a student may take for example career technology education classes advanced placement courses National Baccalaureate classes or even classes offered by a community college or university if your child plans on going to college they should strongly consider completing the distinguished on the cheapest of the three graduation plans this is the only one that insurance eligibility for automatic admission into Texas public universities to earn it which level of achievement students must successfully complete 26 credits including four credits in math including Algebra 2 for credits and Science and credit fill at least one endorsement area students graduating with an endorsement must take all of the courses in the foundation Plan Plus for additional horses to meet this requirement your child was taking additional mathematics and science course in two additional elective courses keep up with the is your child is taking to make sure they're meeting the requirements within the endorsement area the Foundation program requires students to earn just 22 credits by taking more English language arts courses 3 mathematics courses 3 science courses 3 social studies courses to foreign language courses One Fine Arts course 1 physical education course and five elective courses in just a remind you this graduation plan requires fewer credits but it limits your child's options After High School is there 8 grade year your child will fastest elected endorsement and went to five areas these areas include business and industry Stan which is science technology engineering mathematics Public Services Arts and Humanities and multidisciplinary studies this is a change in the way course work is off and therefore is an important decision for you and your child the next four years of coursework will depend on the endorsement decision they make what are considering their options you should encourage them to think about their skills and interests and any high demand Workforce needs in your area your child will need to complete for FedEx in the endorsement area they choose so let's spend a few minutes talking about the different endorsement areas they can choose from this year please note that the law is not require a school district to offer all five endorsement areas and that your child can't use more than one endorsement is there a child interested in doing things that might be business and industry-specific like keeping Good Records fixing things that might be managing projects or working with data if so the business and industry endorsement might be a good fit for your child Horseman area may lead to a career in architecture construction Communications accounting Finance database agricultural Sciences automotive technology information technology marketing welding heating ventilation and air conditioning is your child interested in doing things that involve mathematic science technology or maybe building thinks if so the stem endorsement might be a good fit for your child this endorsement area play lija career and biological sciences veterinary medicine engineering robotics advanced mathematics Computer Sciences like programming or even nanotechnology does your son or daughter enjoy teach making sure others are following the rules or maybe helping people when they're sick if serving the public is an area they enjoy then the public endorsement might be an area of Interest this endorsement area may lead to a career in Health Sciences education law enforcement culinary arts or hospitality does your child enjoy history and politics we're like Reading literature are they bilingual or have the ability to learn other languages in the Arts and Humanities endorsement by me an excellent choice this endorsement area may lead to a career in Political Science World languages literature history cultural studies or Fine Arts disciplinary studies is the default endorsement that must be offered by all the sharks under hb5 if you're doing a lot of different things but isn't sure which career path makes sense for them the multidisciplinary studies and doors area may be a good choice well this endorsement area doesn't have a direct career path it allow students to sample courses from the different endorsement areas as parents it's important for you to understand when you are consent is required under this new legislation first of all you must approve the endorsement area of your child chooses during their eighth grade year however he or she can change their endorsement area at anytime now after their sophomore year here she may decide to fall back into the foundation plan under this option they will graduate with only 22 credits and without taking any courses that lead to an endorsement did your child decide that they do want to switch to the foundation plan the district is required to advise you on the benefits of your child graduating with one or more endorsement you must then file information with the high school counselor allowing your child to graduate without an endorsement as a parent it is important you to discuss career options with your child the economy in Texas is strong and we are fortunate to have many Workforce opportunities After High School help them think their certifications educational options that will help them qualify for highly-skilled jobs your child needs to understand there are many ways to build an associate's and bachelor's degree transferring an associate's degree from a community college to a bachelor's degree at the university is a reality for many of our students your child's future opportunities are endless with the flexibility of this new legislation but they need your advice on the courses to take in high school
