hello Texas students my name is dr. Paula Miller and work with the University of Texas at Austin I'm here with you today to talk about graduation requirement changes that happened as a result of new law called House Bill 5 during the 83rd legislative session you might be wondering why these changes in terms of your graduation require well here's why Texas has a very strong economy and economy that continues to increase the number and the types of jobs that are available Statewide new businesses are being created that bring additional occupations to the market unfortunately business employers don't have highly skilled employees to fill these positions why does this matter to you because you in your future you want to receive the highest income and pay possible this Law changes the way your high school will offer courses and make them available to you it begins with you selecting an endorsement area during the 8th grade year it's important that you select one based on your interest because you're going to be taking courses in that area over the course of your high school career these courses played two job-related certifications associate degrees and even college readiness if you would like to go to college After High School you're not alone in this process in this important decision making you'll be working with your parent for them to approve the endorsement area you select and they're going to be working with the high school to monitor your progress within your endorsement area to help you make this important decision I've assembled a group of my friends to help you think through the endorsement areas these videos will light career opportunities within a specific field of study we wish you the best as you make this decision good luck in your future
