Course: English I (ENG 1)
Course Description: English I students study grammar, literature, spelling, vocabulary and writing. In grammar, students review parts of speech, capitalization and punctuation, study phrases, clauses, sentence patterns and recognize correct agreement of verbs and pronouns, especially those areas tested on TAAS. Vocabulary and spelling are studied weekly. Students will read short stories, poetry, a novel and write a short research paper. Writing emphasizes the development of different types of paragraphs (i.e., narrative, descriptive, expository).

Course Description: It is an integrated course of study of literature and composition. Traditional and contemporary literary selections are read and analyzed from the genres of the short story, drama, non-fiction, poetry and the novel. Grammar units are not taught; rather, correct usage and sentence structure is emphasized in the composition units. Vocabulary study is introduced through a unit on word etymology and supplemented with regular lessons in vocabulary workbooks.

Course Description: Students continue the study of grammar, reviewing the sections from English I and II. This is incorporated with compositions. A research paper is written during the second semester. American literature is studied chronologically, beginning with the Colonial Period and going through modern works. Four novels are also read.

Course Description: Students in this course will be engaged in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way genre conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.  Additionally, this course is intended to have the rigor of a college level course. AP English Language and Composition emphasizes expository, analytical and argumentative writing, which will be used to for a basis for academic and professional writing as well as personal and reflective writing aids writing in any context. Students will learn to think and read critically, analyze the language of various texts, become effective and creative writers, and develop strong, well-supported arguments. In addition, students are tested on the ability to understand and use a wide variety of words and sentence structures as they are taught throughout the year. Students will be provided instructional feedback both during and after the writing process in order to better evaluate the effective use of vocabulary, diction, sentence structure, organization, establishing and maintaining voice and use of effective tone. Students will focus on skills needed for success on the AP exam.

Course Description: This course is a dual credit course for seniors who plan to go to college. It is a much more in-depth study of literature, analysis and logic. This course is a study of British literature and various modes of writing. The student is given the opportunity to respond personally and critically to readings from the 4 principal literary genres. Emphasis is placed on development of skills and techniques necessary for writing effective expository prose. A research paper is mandatory. This course meets the requirements for English 1301 and English 1302 at the college level. Student receives 6 credits.

Course Description: This course is a survey of English literature from the early Romantic writers to the early twentieth century writers. Although careful attention is given to the historical, social and intellectual developments that gave rise to the literature, the emphasis of the course is on the individual selections themselves as outstanding expressions of the English literary heritage. The course employs critical reading, thinking, and writing skills in an analysis of a wide variety of selected readings. This course meets the 2322 and 2323 English requirements at the college level. Student receives 6 credits.
