Course: English I (ENG 1)
Course Description: English I students study grammar, literature, spelling, vocabulary and writing. In grammar, students review parts of speech, capitalization and punctuation, study phrases, clauses, sentence patterns and recognize correct agreement of verbs and pronouns, especially those areas tested on TAAS. Vocabulary and spelling are studied weekly. Students will read short stories, poetry, a novel and write a short research paper. Writing emphasizes the development of different types of paragraphs (i.e., narrative, descriptive, expository).

Course Description: It is an integrated course of study of literature and composition. Traditional and contemporary literary selections are read and analyzed from the genres of the short story, drama, non-fiction, poetry and the novel. Grammar units are not taught; rather, correct usage and sentence structure is emphasized in the composition units. Vocabulary study is introduced through a unit on word etymology and supplemented with regular lessons in vocabulary workbooks.

Grade Level: 11
Course Description: Students continue the study of grammar, reviewing the sections from English I and II. This is incorporated with compositions. A research paper is written during the second semester. American literature is studied chronologically, beginning with the Colonial Period and going through modern works. Four novels are also read.

Pre-requisite: English I, II, III
Grade Level: 12
Course Description: This course is a study of British literature and various modes of writing. Grammar is taught in conjunction with composition and a research paper is mandatory.
